If you live in or are considering purchasing a home that was built before 1980, there’s a good possibility that the house isn’t insulated or is severely under insulated. Fiberglass, cellulose, or rockwool insulation will settle over time, causing a drop in efficiency. To maintain adequate protection, we recommend adding additional insulation every three to five years.
How will I know when I need to add more Insulation?
We recommend that you first inspect the attic area of your home to determine if more insulation is required. If you can see loose fill between the ceiling joists or exposed batts, this means that it’s time to upgrade your home’s insulation. Additional signs that you may need an insulation upgrade include:
- If you’re electric bill has been steadily climbing.
- Temperatures vary from room to room.
- Ice dams on your roof are forming, or the attic leaks water.
What are my options?
The process of retrofitting a home with insulation isn’t much different than a new home that is under construction. However, determining which type of insulation that you will need also depends on your circumstances. For example, radiant barrier insulation may be the perfect option for your attic directly under the roof, but your walls may require cellulose or fiberglass insulation.
