“Retrofit” is an industry term that professionals use to refer to the upgrade of a home’s existing insulation.
Insulation for Older Homes
If you live in or are considering purchasing a home that was built before 1980, there’s a good possibility that the house isn’t insulated or is severely under-insulated. Fiberglass, cellulose, or rock wool insulation will settle over time, causing a drop in efficiency. To maintain adequate protection, we recommend adding additional insulation every three to five years.
How will I know when I need to add more Insulation?
We recommend that you first inspect the attic area of your home to determine if more insulation is required. If you can see loose fill between the ceiling joists or exposed batts, this means that it’s time to upgrade your home’s insulation. Additional signs that you may need an insulation upgrade include:
-
- If you’re electric bill has been steadily climbing.
- Temperatures vary from room to room.
- Ice dams on your roof are forming, or the attic leaks water.
What are my options?
The process of retrofitting a home with insulation isn’t much different than a new home that is under construction. However, determining which type of insulation that you will need also depends on your circumstances. For example, radiant barrier insulation may be the perfect option for your attic directly under the roof, but your walls may require cellulose or fiberglass insulation.

Which type of insulation solution should you choose?
While we only carry the most reliable products and can attest to their effectiveness, not all insulation is made equal.

Spray Foam Insulation
The most sophisticated insulation on the market, spray foam primarily comes in open-cell and closed-cell formulations. It limits air leakage, helping to keep your home warm in the winter and cool in the summer. Spray foam insulation is long-lasting, doesn’t retain water, and isn’t a food source for pests.
Blown-In Fiberglass Insulation
A popular choice for retrofit wall insulation, blown-in fiberglass offers tremendous coverage as it can be added to even the smallest crevices. However, it provides a lower R-Value per inch of thickness. Blown-in fiberglass can be added to pre-existing fiberglass insulation in good condition.
Fiberglass Batt Insulation
Fiberglass batt insulation is a popular choice for attics and crawlspaces, because it’s affordable, easy to install, and come in a variety of standard sizes. It offers good thermal performance, is naturally fire-resistant, and can quickly boost energy efficiency without a big upfront cost.
Rockwool Insulation
Rockwool insulation is ideal for attics and crawlspaces because it provides excellent thermal performance, natural fire resistance, and outstanding moisture control. Its dense structure also offers superior soundproofing and long-lasting durability without settling over time. Similar to cellulose, rockwool is also made from natural materials.
Cellulose Insulation
Made with recycled materials and treated with natural chemicals, cellulose insulation is another a great choice for because it offers excellent thermal performance, and can fill small gaps and irregular spaces better than batt insulation. It’s better than blown-in fiberglass for reducing air leaks and adds a layer of fire and pest resistance.
Air Sealing
While it’s not a substitute for insulation, you might choose to air seal instead of re-insulation because stopping air leaks can immediately prevent drafts, moisture problems, and energy loss, often delivering a quick, temporary solution to drafts and air leaks. Mostly, air sealing is the first and most critical step before adding insulation to get the full benefit.
Trust the Experts
Because improper crawlspace protection against the elements can lead to structural damage (and potentially more expense) down the road, it’s best to leave it to experienced professionals.

Joe from Cameron really went the extra mile to be sure my attic was properly insulated, while still allowing for some storage space. The installation guys were great. I highly recommend Cameron!
